VERNet is deploying an optical fibre network across Victoria that will help Victoria's researchers and educators to deliver tomorrow's ideas faster.
This network infrastructure will help Victorian universities and researchers to collaborate more effectively internationally and deliver better science and know how for all Australians. VERNet is building or leasing up to 2000 km of optic fibre connecting almost 120 sites across metropolitan and regional Victoria. The network is called the Victorian Education and Research Network (VERN) and is a long-term, collaborative investment by the Victorian universities, CSIRO and Commonwealth Government.
A fibre loop around greater Geelong has been fully built, with final splicing works completed on June 14.
The first installation of WDM equipment in the VERN network was completed this week.
Fibre between Caulfield and Frankston has been deployed on schedule, and on budget.
Town fibre in Bendigo and Shepparton is one step closer after two recent town planning approvals.
