First WDM installed at Market St
Wednesday 13th June 2007
The first installation of WDM equipment in the VERN network was completed this week.
The first installation was at the Market St PoP (point of presence) in Melbourne's CBD. Further installations will take place in Werribee and Geelong, followed by sites between the CBD and Churchill, on the Loy Yang project.
Before WDM equipment can be installed, the underlying optical fibre infrastructure must be completed first. This sequence largely explains why some VERN segments will have WDM equipment installed earlier than others.
WDM equipment complements optic fibre to greatly increase its capacity. VERNet will be installing WDM equipment in some sections of the state-wide VERN network. These include the Caulfield Arc, fibre between Bendigo and Wodonga (via Shepparton) and the North West Metro loop.
