Latrobe Valley towns being connected, Berwick in the wings
25th June 2006
Construction on the 46 km Latrobe Valley fibre precinct is underway and is expected to be finished in the next several weeks.
The precinct is a fibre loop connecting Churchill, Moe, and Traralgon. The fibre also connects to the 160km CBD to Loy Yang link, one of the anchor segments of the VERN network.
Bad weather has forced work crews to use elevated work platforms slowing the rate at which cable can be laid. This has pushed out the work schedule by a couple of weeks. Construction started on May 1.
VERNet has also completed detailed designs for the Berwick segment of the Loy Yang project. The link will allow Monash University’s campus at Berwick to be connected to the network. The Berwick fibre also connects to the CBD to Loy Yang link.
Construction in Berwick is expected to start in a few weeks. The Latrobe Valley and Berwick projects are funded under the Commonwealth Government's SII intiative through the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).
