Major contract signed with Nortel and Silk

Tuesday 19th December 2006

VERNet has signed a multi-million dollar contract to purchase WDM equipment for its statewide optic fibre and services network.

WDM equipment enables VERNet to increase the capacity of network fibre, as it creates multiple wavelengths on the one piece of fibre. This is easier than buying and operating more fibre, particularly over long distances or available fibres are scarce.

VERNet has been negotiating with global networking company, Nortel Networks, for optical transmission equipment, and local telecommunications company, Silk Telecom, for network management services.

Contract negotiations have been taking place for four months. This followed several months of tender and due diligence.

"This is a major milestone for VERNet," said VERNet CEO, John Carruthers. "These arrangements will begin to translate almost immediately into circuit capacity for our member institutions," he said.

"The technology we are acquiring will fit the short-term, and provide a very strong technical and economic platform on which to deliver capacity to our members over the next few years."

The arrangement also features a contract for network operations centre services, which provide network management.

VERNet has already begun ordering its WDM equipment and will begin installing it in early 2007. Delivery is expected to take 12 weeks.
